Yuyuan Garden: The Beauty of a Son’s Love

Situated in Anren Jie, Shanghai, Yuyuan Garden is a renowned classical garden of immense picturesque beauty. It was constructed by Pan Yunduan a royal officer in the Ming Dynasty for the tranquil enjoyment of his parents in their old age. The garden was completed in 1577 but saw many changes as the fortunes of the Yunduan family fluctuated. In 1760 it was purchased and renovated by several rich merchants only to suffer considerable damage during the Opium War in the next century. Following an extensive five year restoration project, Yuyuan Garden was opened to the public in 1961.

The garden which spans an area of 5 acres consists of six separate scenic areas and innumerable attractions. The entrance leads to the Great Rockery. At a height of 14m, this is the largest and oldest of its kind south of the Yangtze River. Its summit provides a beautiful birds-eye view of the entire garden.  Cuixiu Hall located at its foot is a serene spot with ancient trees and multihued flowers. The hall also houses several interesting curio shops. The Sansui Hall which means “lucky” comprises nine halls and is the largest structure in Yuyuan. The Yule Pavilion and Wanhua Chamber area contains many corridors, courtyards and pavilions as well as delicately winding streams adding to the exotic beauty of the place. Another area of considerable interest is the Dianchun Hall which served as the headquarters of Xiaodao Hui, a rebellious group which opposed the Qing Dynasty. The central attraction of Yuyuan is undoubtedly its amazing Jade Rock. The 3.3m tall rock is marked by 72 holes. Burning incense under it causes the smoke to come out of all its holes while pouring water on it causes a fountain like effect leading to its immense popularity throughout the years. True to its purpose Yuyuan Garden remains a haven of exquisitely serene beauty.
